If You Love ‘Great British Baking Show,’ You Need to Watch Netflix’s ‘Bake Squad’

By Alexandra Hough on July 19, 2021

Move over, Paul Hollywood. There’s a new reality baking series coming to Netflix, and it looks just as intense (and delicious) as The Great British Baking Show.

On Monday, the streaming platform dropped the trailer for its upcoming series, Bake Squad. The baking series, which is hosted by Christina Torsi, features four talented bakers—chosen by the MasterCheff judge herself—who will compete across eight episodes in an attempt to have their dessert chosen for a special occasion (we’re talking weddings, birthdays and celebrations of life).

Based on the clip, it’s pretty clear that the show is filled with bizarre desserts—giant chocolate eggs, dessert pizzas and the biggest ice cream cone we’ve ever seen. And in addition to making us hungry, it seems like the light-hearted content we’ve been craving.

Netflix’s official synopsis reads: “In each episode of Bake Squad, four individually brilliant bakers will battle it out to see whose dessert will be chosen for someone’s extra special big day. These bakers have been personally selected by Milk Bar founder Christina Tosi, who built an empire on delicious cookie dough. For her next sweet trick, Tosi has built this squad of bakers who have one mission and one mission only: Make dessert dreams come true! High hopes, high temperatures, high stakes…all courtesy of the Bake Squad.”

Season one of Bake Squad is hitting small screens on August 11. And we simply can’t wait.

Christina Tosi Is At The Helm Of The New Netflix Show ‘Bake Squad’

By Tess Koman on July 19th, 2021

Christina Tosi (founder of Milk Bar, judge on MasterChef, lovely and wildly talented human) has a very endearing way of bringing gentleness to reality TV, and I am pleased to report her newest venture is no different…except that it might be even sweeter to watch than everything else she’s done before. Welcome to Bake Squad, a new Netflix show premiering August 11. And we’ve got the first trailer!

In the video above, you’ll meet the four outrageously talented bakers Christina has chosen as her, well, squad in order to take on a series of desserts meant for a few lucky individuals’ big days. They’ll compete against each other across eight episodes in order to have their dessert chosen for the occasion. The competitors are cake expert Ashley Holt, pastry illusionist Christophe Rull, pie aficionado Maya-Camille Broussard, and chocolatier/dessert wizard Gonzo Jimenez. You will fall in love with each of them; I certainly have in putting together a bunch of forthcoming Bake Squad content you may or may not see on this very website in the next few weeks.

Anyway, from the short clip alone, you’ll learn the aforementioned big days range from fairytale weddings, big-deal birthdays, and, most importantly, celebrations of health. As this show was shot during the pandemic, these happy moments are particularly lovely, both for the bakers and the people who get to eat their desserts. Per Netflix, this is more than just a handful of people who are exceptional at their crafts competing: “It’s [making] dessert dreams come true!” (You see what I mean about the sweetness of it all, yeah?)

Oh god, I forgot to mention the dessert itself—it’s all wild. I’m talking chocolate eggs large enough to transport Lady Gaga to any award show of her choosing, words spelled out by pastries that are big enough to be on billboards, and so very much more. Enjoy!
